While our ship sailed the river to the port near Brussels, we were told last night about our adventure today. Breakfast in Belgium, Lunch in Luxembourg, Dinner in Germany. We had to pack our suitcases and board buses to take us to a different ship – Viking Sigyn which will be waiting on the Rhine River past the too low to navigate section.
Two and a half hour to Luxembourg City. The bus driver provides a description of the countryside and history before we arrive at 10:30 AM. There are many tall windmills in this country – everywhere! The countryside is flat and turns hillier as we near Luxembourg. Lots of farming land, and the land is very brown due to the drought.

Arriving in Luxembourg City, the Viking person takes us to the city centre and from there we are on our own. We stop and pick up a self-guided walking tour brochure from the Visitor Center. There are several squares to wander, a church, picturesque buildings and streets.
Most famous, the Bock promontory which is considered the cradle of the city of Luxembourg. Count Siegfried of the Ardennes built his fortified castle here and from there several other walls were built as defense. We did not walk down to see this area but you are able to visit the Casemates ( a network of underground galleries) as well. Not enough time again!

Erected on the ancient Beck bastion (1600’s) is the “Gelle Fra” Memorial, the golden lady. It was erected in memory of the soldiers who fell during WW1 and today is considered to symbolize freedom and resistance by the Luxembourg people.

A stop at the Notre-Dame de Luxembourg Cathedral built in 1613.

Outside on the side of the Cathedral is a sculpture dedicated to the Jewish people who lost their lives.

Next we find our way to a quaint square with interesting buildings and statues.

Time for some lunch at a cafe. How many mussels can they give a person in Luxembourg? Not even possible to count!

Time to walk back to the bus and a few more photos of Luxembourg City.

A 3-1/2 hour drive and we board the Viking Sigyn in Kehl, Germany just across the river from Strasbourg, France. A glimpse of sun during the rainy evening provides a nice rainbow to end the day.
