While driving to Monticello, a brown sign on I-64 noted the exit for the Trevilian Station Battlefield. Since we were headed back that way and had time, we exited off to find this historic site. Driving on rolling country roads in rural Virginia, we reach the battlefield. This was the sight in 1864 of the largest cavalry battle in the Civil War. While that seems very historic, there really isn’t much there.
Just before we arrived at the battlefield, there was an old building in the woods called The Netherlands Tavern — still standing from that era. It is privately owned now.
Other than a couple of historic markers long the road to get here, not much to see. So, a pretty drive for kind of a “nothing burger” for photos. Learned about the history, though.
I did find a YouTube video with a person describing the battle and standing at the same place we stopped. This battle was also known as Custer’s First Last Stand. If you are interested, watch the videos to understand the history.
