Today, Debra and I will be the two doing the exploration of Atlanta. We choose the National Center for Civil and Human Rights Museum. It is located in the same area as the Coca Cola Museum and the Atlanta Aquarium. I did not make it to these two gems…another time.

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights museum is an educational, insightful walk through history of our country’s struggle over the past 100+ years. There are many photos and descriptive display boards along with short movies to provide the history – much of what we have lived through.

There is much in these exhibits that is disturbing to read about again….then there is the hope that Martin Luther King Jr. provided in the midst of the 1960’s.

One of the interactive exhibits is the lunch counter of a North Carolina Woolworth’s where students went to sit at the ‘white only’ counter. You listen to a broadcast of what the news covered that day when many were beaten and hospitalized even thought they were being peaceful while just sitting at the counter. Wow! It truly was moving to know what these young people did to help make the country focus on the civil rights movement and the injustices still occurring.

The real disturbing section is the history of lynching. Truly unimaginable that much hate exists.

Some of the quotes among the various exhibits emphasize how important standing up for human rights can be.

On the second floor there were exhibits continuing with the human rights needed worldwide.

You will leave this museum wanting to return to see what you might have missed. Definitely worth a visit if you are ever in Atlanta.

Next stop we thought would be Atlanta Breakfast Club….too busy! Instead a stop for some ice cream next door.

Then we are off to the Horizon Theatre. A funky local theater in business for 42 years. The play “Holy Chicken Sandwich” is what happens at an opening of a new Holy Grail Chicken restaurant (a take off on Chick-Fil-A). Absolutely this play is funny, quirky, creative, and there are many more adjectives to be said about this play. The actors worked hard to capture their character’s and put on a great show.

To end another perfect day – dinner at South City Kitchen. This place is a must to experience the Atlanta vibe and savor some delicious southern food. No room left for dessert!
