The last day of a bike tour is a little bitter sweet. A week of riding is exhilarating and yet the muscles are saying they need a rest. The weather is cool and cloudy today.

We will ride to the end of the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes and then back to Wallace for lunch and a silver mine tour.

As the van prepares to leave the lodge in Kellogg, the motor cross bikes are lining up on the street in front of the hotel. Wow – it will be something to watch them coming down that mountain!

Breakfast at The Beanery and then hop on our bikes and ride.

This section of the trail from Kellogg to Wallace is much more populated. As we still follow the river, the trail passes businesses and houses and then periodically into a forest. It is 18 miles to the end of the trail at Mullan, Idaho. Of course, there is a snack table setup! Have you noticed we are eating a lot? No losing weight no matter how many miles we ride!

Downtown Mullan is small with a little bit of history scattered near the park. Captain Mullan’s statue is still standing. He is responsible for building the first highways into this area of the country. The town is also proud of its mining heritage.

The group rides back to Wallace to turn in our bikes so they can be loaded up into the trailer, sadly. Next, explore Wallace and have some lunch. A few key highlights about Wallace. It is located in the heart of the Silver Valley, which is one of the richest silver-producing regions on Earth. Currently there are 5 mines operating with the Sunshine Mine re-opening recently. The movie Dante’s Peak was filmed in and around Wallace. Busy in the summer, quiet in the winter. Interstate 90 was going to go through the middle of the town. Instead, they registered every building in the town on the National Historic Registry which saved the town.
First stop for us is lunch. Frank gets a hot dog and the rest of us go to The Fainting Goat. Then a little shopping in the unusual stores in town.

A stop in the gem store and at the Center of the Universe, a medallion in the middle of an intersection.

A must-do in this town is the Silver Mine Tour. Again, lots to say but the pictures tell the story. Our tour guide is Lee who is a third generation mine worker. He did a fantastic job of telling the history and how things work down in the mine.

Back in town, we board the van back for the two hour drive back to Spokane and our hotel. We part ways with our tour group and the best guides ever and wish everyone a safe trip home. Who knows? Our paths might cross again on another bike tour!
On the way to dinner, we see that a USA Judo competition is being held at the hotel. Russ and I thought we might try out. This is the last laugh for this trip! See you on the next one in July.
