While the weather is cool, it is perfect for hiking. The sweet wildflowers are blooming in the woods and grassy hills with the sun shining on them brightly.

I would not say I have adjusted to the altitude as I am still huffing and puffing up the trail. Luckily, my legs seem to be able to tackle the steep inclines and rugged land. We pass the penny rock, a landmark on the trail where people leave a penny (for good luck in getting back?).

We first hike up to an area where there is a picnic table and a cowboy (cattle rancher) named Trace giving a talk to a group of hikers. The area is a tribute to a man named “Cookie.” Trace explains about different cattle breeds, how they keep some, where they pasture in the winter and summers, etc. A very knowledgeable rancher and passionate about his work.

We continue to climb up Hemphill Bald trail. Through a forest and then into an open area. The trail runs parallel to the Great Smoky National Park property which should give those who have been there an idea of the trail’s steepness and beauty. We pass by someone’s luxury mountain ‘cabin.’ The fences up here are covered with mosses and lichens even after the winter.

At the top, there is a picnic bench made of stone with an informative sign providing information on the amazing vista in view. Breathtaking! And a good place to reflect and rest!

Back down the mountain, time to kick up the feet and relax. Then off to the local ranch-resort for a beverage of choice. A rustic, luxury ranch with a restaurant and bar inside the lodge and an area outside to enjoy the weather and views.

Back at home, dinner and a fire pit to roast marshmallows for s’mores and just enjoy the evening outdoors. What a perfect day in the mountains!

Cookie had the right idea: Relax in Peace, Take time to think, Eat with friends, Pick beautiful music, Be with nature.
