Cap-aux-Meules – 4 October 2025

Acadians are considered the original settlers of the Magdalen Islands archipelago in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Les Iles da Madeleine).

The residents trace their heritage from castaways from shipwrecks. Located just north of Prince Edward Island. Cap-aux-Meules (meaning Grindstone Island) is where many of the Quebec government organizations have offices because it is an important fishing port as well as a commercial cargo and ferry terminal. The island’s name is mainly because of the grindstone quarry located on the island.

When we passed from the St. Lawrence River into the Gulf we were at 49 degrees north and now we are back at 47 degrees latitude.

I never saw this black ball thingy on our ship before today. I asked AI to tell me what it is –

“That black ball hanging on the pole at the bow of your cruise ship is a “day shape” — specifically, a black ball, which is an internationally recognized maritime signal indicating that the vessel is at anchor.”

Yep -we had to take the tender into the port today.

Judy and I were signed up for a Zodiac tour of the islands. Well, the wind was 35 knots – no Zodiac tour nor Special Ops Boat today. Too windy. Probably the affect of the hurricane passing in the Atlantic close to this area.

Our tour is the “Highlights of Cap-aux-Meules.” A short tide on the tender boat to the shore. Flags blowing in the wind at the port – representing Canada, Quebec, Norway (for Viking), USA (for the other ship docked offshore, Seabourne).

A very quaint island with only 7,000 residents who live in houses usually very far apart from each other and of bright colors. Even in downtown next to a gas station! Summers the island fills with tourists.

First stop is a commercial oyster house. A museum, a tasting and a beautiful view of the beach and coast outside. The family’s business was lobstering and then they discovered how much easier and economical growing oysters were so they changed their business.

Next stop is to take a quick picture of the famous Lighthouse Cape Alright still standing since 1928. Again, quaint.

Further down the only road on the island, we stop at the beach where the famous Plage de la Dune du Sud. Red limestone rocks that have formed the coast and several caves along the beach.

Then, a scenic stop for a great view of the gulf and our ship and the Seabourn sitting offshore.

A final stop is the wonderful local winery with award wining fruit wines available only on this island. The owner is entertaining and since he is a true Acadian with very poor English, the tour guide has to keep translating. They provide three wines to taste. All made with locally gown fruits and quite delicious!

The tour ends at the harbor to board the tender back to the ship. A quite unique island. Tonight we sail away to Louisbourg, Cape Breton Island. A last look at Cap-aux-Meules.
