Edgar Allan Poe Speakeasy- 19 September 2025

If you ever have been a fan of Edgar Allan Poe’s writing, you would enjoy an evening of cocktails and performance of some of his works. Quite fun!

Our setting is in a beautiful building on New College Campus with a fantastic view of the Sarasota Bay at sunset.

Inside we are treated to four stories by Poe and quite the macabre works they are! Starting with “Pit and the Pendulum.”

Each reading/performance accompanied by a small beverage to help create the mood.

The next reading is “The Cask of Amontillado.” Quite the tale…

The narrator Montresor lures Fortunato (in this ready, it’s a woman, instead of a drunken man) into the catacombs beneath his palazzo. He pretends he wants Fortunato’s opinion on a cask of fine wine (Amontillado). Once deep inside, Montresor chains Fortunato to a wall and bricks her in alive, sealing the wall stone by stone.

Next one of Poe’s most famous poems “Annabel Lee.” This was the last work written by him.

Finally, we hear the “Fall of the House of Usher,” most famous example of his Gothic fiction. Again, wonderfully performed!

After taking an Uber to my friend’s home, we are treated to a delicious dinner and carrot cake! Fun local evening with no airplane travel involved.

  1. Big fan I am!  From my high school honors English days, this just popped into my mind:  I was a child, and she was a child. . . Your evening sounds like a unique adventure–and with Megan and Russ!  Thanks for sharing.Marj LawsonSent from my iPhone
