North Carolina – Lake Toxaway Day 2

The weather has changed and it is now cool, very windy, and cloudy in the morning clearing in the afternoon.

The morning we start off to do the ‘must see’ Whitewater Falls. The falls are as beautiful as ever with mountain vistas in the distance between the budding trees. This year, I do not hike the 100+ stairs down. Lesley and family do for a closer look at the falls.

Our next stop is the top of Toxaway Mountain. As we wind our way up the road to the top, I tell my granddaughters about the funny song we sang as children – “She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain.” I find an old version on YouTube which makes us laugh (https://youtu.be/Ghd-xL5gAjc?si=vxK0ZB7EjCfcvrwY) and then a more current version remade for children where they changed the words and is even funnier (https://youtu.be/CeXXT2MRlv8?feature=shared). This is vacation amusement!

At the top of Toxaway Mountain, there are walking paths and a play ground. It is so windy up here I’m certain we have a windchill happens as my hands could use some gloves!

While walking the trail, there are tall grasses, now dried but still surviving the 4500 elevation windy weather. Dan explains to me that this grass was used for brooms and they even call it Broom Grass. I’ve never seen this mountain prairie plant before.

A drive down the mountain to have a light lunch. Afterwards, everyone goes their separate ways for an afternoon break. My hotel room is quite comfortable and quiet allowing me to write this blog and spend some time reading a book.

Tonight we will get together for dinner. Lesley and family are continuing to enjoy their spring break vacation time.
