Tobermory, Ontario, Canada – 24 August 2024

Tobermory is a small community located at the northern tip of the Bruce Peninsula on the Georgian Bay. Tobermory is located next to Fathom Five National Marine Park, Canada’s first national marine conservation area. The marine park includes 22 shipwrecks, several historic lighthouses, and glass-bottom cruises from Tobermory. The community is also known as the “freshwater Scuba diving capital of the world,” making it a popular vacation destination.

I apparently missed a unique tourist site in Killarney. A giant oar carved out of white pine. Rather unusual! The Big Dipper is a 107-foot-long paddle made from Eastern White Cedar that was built by expedition paddler Mike Ranta to celebrate Killarney’s 200th anniversary in 2020. A cruiser friend sent me the photo to share.

The ship’s excursion choices today involve the “toys” as they are referred to: Special Ops Boat, Zodiac, Kayaks. There is also one additional excursion to an island where you can hike for 4 hours.

Our adventure was going to be the Special Ops Boat and a trip by tender to the town, named after a town in Scotland. The Special Ops Boat had technical issues so I took a Zodiac trip again to just be out on these beautiful waters.

More pictures from the Zodiac trip as it took the group around a couple of islands. The Bruce Peninsula is the beginning of the Niagara Escarpment in Canada, a geological wonder. Stunning nature at its finest.

A fun finale to the Zodiac tour is when another Zodiac pulls alongside to provide us with glasses of champagne. This makes up for the cancellation of the special ops – a nice gesture🥂.

A tender ride to the dock in Little Tub Harbor. Tobermory is a quaint town with lots of activity on a Saturday. Summer tourism is at its peak on a day where the weather is perfect – 75 degrees, party cloud with a breeze.

Steve stayed on the ship so I must do a beer tasting for us at the local Tobermory brewery. Quite tasty, not as hoppy as a Jai Lai.🍺 Another couple from the cruise ship sat across from me and also imbibed!

Tobermory is where the Bruce Trail starts and follows the Niagara Escarpment to Niagara Falls a total of 456 miles. The trail starts on the Little Tub Harbor so I can now say I hiked the Bruce Trail.

Clouds are moving in this afternoon. We will attend a lecture and have an early dinner. Tomorrow we arrive in Detroit and have to go thru immigration into the USA again sometime early afternoon. Thanks to each of you who read this blog. I hope you are enjoying traveling the Great Lakes and Georgian Bay. The ship will continue through Lake Erie and Lake Ontario on the way to Toronto through the Welland Canal.
