Algoma, Wisconsin – 20 August 2024

Today, we are not doing excursions. My plan is a Lynn Walking Tour around Algoma, Wisconsin, located on the Door County Peninsula. I leave the ship to walk the town in search of a pharmacy and a post office.

Having grown up in the Midwest, Wisconsin is a state I’m familiar with from my youth. It is a state known for Green Bay Packer football, fishing on Lake Michigan, Beer, Cheese, Wine – including breweries and bars, and nice middle America homes with manicured yards, and usually farms close by. Algoma is one of these midwestern towns. Population is around 3200, known as Friendly Algoma (but where are all the people?).

The ship’s tender takes us to the town dock across from the iconic red lighthouse to greet us.

The “Lynn Tour” starts on Steele Street toward Fourth. The old buildings are well-maintained and murals painted on the side of some of the buildings tell a story of Algoma. It is early in the morning and no one seems to be out and about. Of course, Midwesterners are working people so they must all be at work! The town was established in 1856 where the Ahnapee River meets Lake Michigan.

A corn field is across from the water tower on the street where I find the post office, industrial warehouse and Algoma utility office. Outside of town must be other farms based on the trucks I keep seeing.

As I wander back to the dock along Lake Michigan on the Crescent Beach Boardwalk, birds are gathered along the shoreline. Canadian Geese leave their mark on the boardwalk! The marina with the fishing boats and their rods sticking up are near the dock where the tender is waiting.

Back to the ship!
