Duluth, MN – 14 August 2024

We are spending the day before boarding our cruise in Duluth, Minnesota. While we do not have a car, we can walk a little bit to explore. Our hotel is located on Superior Street which is a Main Street in Duluth. We walk along Superior to a CVS and see some interesting sites. Bob Dylan Way is partially on this street. Dylan was born in Duluth in 1941 and they are proud.

Duluth is the largest city on Lake Superior and a major port. According to Wikipedia: Duluth is accessible to the Atlantic Ocean, 2,300 miles (3,700 km) away, via the Great Lakes Waterway and St. Lawrence Seaway. The Port of Duluth is the world’s farthest inland port accessible to oceangoing ships and is the largest and busiest port on the Great Lakes. It is also among the top 20 U.S. ports by tonnage. Common items shipped from Duluth include coal, iron ore, grain, limestone, cement, salt, wood pulp, steel coil, and wind turbine parts.

Our walk about on Superior to CVS allowed us to see old buildings with 100 year old establishments. Of course, breweries! Plus, this is snow country so the fireplugs all have the high sticks for when it snows they can find them. Also, this city has many indoor elevated walkways for winter and you can also use them in summer to get between buildings over the streets.

Right across from our hotel is appropriately, a Duluth Trading Co. store. The really nice feature of the city is a walkway along Lake Superior. We stayed up on the high walkway; below the walkway runs along the lake for just over 6 miles.

There are quite a few theaters on Superior street, both play and movie houses. A beautiful old building is right next door to our hotel with a lot of shops. It’s always nice to see a city preserve their older architecture.

A museum is another way to understand a city besides walking around. Duluth has a great railway museum – Lake Superior Railroad Museum. It is located in the lower level of the old train Depot. This depot played a central in the many immigrants who came to the U.S. for a better life in the late 1800’s, early 1900’s. The museum preserves the many different steam and electric locomotives that served to bring people and goods across the USA. They have done an excellent job. Definitely worth a stop if you are ever in Duluth. This first group of photos is from the street-level of the train depot.

Here are pictures from the Railroad Museum. Snow pushers, electric engines, steam engines, passenger cars, and pieces of railroad tools and equipment. Video gives you a taste of the museum trains exhibits.

A landmark of Duluth is the Aerial Bridge. Our ship will go under this when we leave.

Dinner at the 100 year old Pickwick Restaurant with a view of Lake Superior.

At the Pickwick, they cook the steaks over a coal fire inside the restaurant.

Let the adventure begin!
