It was a perfect, warm day to visit this small and interesting park. Located in Palmetto, FL on Snead Island, the park was established to protect an archeological site of Indian mounds and the habitat located on the island sitting between the Manatee River and Tampa Bay.

There are several short, mostly shaded, walk trails. An observation tower provides a fantastic view of the preserve and Tampa Bay’s Skyway Bridge.

The park management has built several walkways for safely going onto the Indian mounds. Along the boardwalk are various placards telling the story of the area including original settlers to the area.

Pictured below are the remains of an old chimney from the Horton’s home. They were the last owners of this land before turning it over to the State of Florida and Manatee County.

There are a variety of trees on the island and we notice quite a few of the Florida strangler fig trees.

The Live Oak trees here are fascinating. They are large with long extending and twisting branches which must of helped them survive many storms. Lots of Spanish moss around, too.

We see a few Gumbo Limbo trees with the coppery colored bark.

Along the trails, I am always stopping to shoot some pictures of the breathtaking blue water, the mangroves, and even see some fish and a couple of kayakers

The Observation Tower view of Tampa Bay is fantastic! There is also a kayak launch but we didn’t venture that far as the temperature was beginning to climb.

Another gem of a park to enjoy the Florida habitat and water. After our walk around, we head over to the Riverhouse restaurant at the end of the Manatee River Main Pier. An enjoyable lunch and beautiful day for a park outing!

Thanks friends for a fun adventure!

wonderful
