Another adventure to central Florida! Today my sister and I are exploring in and around Sanford, FL, Sanford is known as the “Historic Waterfront Gateway City” and sits on the southern shore of Lake Monroe at the head of navigation on the St. Johns River. Population is almost 70,000 and was founded in 1877.

We explored the Historic Commercial District. Shops and restaurants including a famous German restaurant called “Hollerbach’s.” Next door is a shop selling German clothing and trinkets as well as a bakery/grocery store. Definitely coming back to eat some German food.

The buildings are anywhere from late 1800’s into the early 1900’s with signs indicating their history. The streets are paved with bricks. Fun to explore. There were also art sculptures and murals around the downtown district.

After walking main street, we strolled down to Lake Monroe where there is a marina and Veterans memorial. A paved trail runs along Lake Monroe, called the Riverwalk; people are enjoying walking and riding bicycles. Very pretty place to visit.
