Lovers Key State Park – 10 August 2025

This park is one on the keys between Estero and Ft. Myers. It is linked with an area known as Black Island. Local lore says that in the early to mid-1900s, it was so remote that only lovers—seeking privacy—would make the trip out there.  And it is rather remote!

There are trails in the park which might be nice in the winter season. However, there remains definite hurricane damage in park so I did not even try to find the trails. Another clue was the gift shop – it is located in a trailer near the tram stop which looks new.

Just a stop at the beach parking. Again, nice it is drizzling now so very few people. There is a tram that will take you from one of the further back parking areas to the walkway to the beach. I’m able to park right where the tram leaves people off.

A boardwalk crosses the canal banks of Black Island. Several young men are enjoying fishing in the canals.

The beach is expansive with no amenities. Definitely a remote place. There are some birds nesting further up the beach and a sign tells me there were others here recently. Looks like some turtle nests are marked as well. The sand is nothing like Siesta Key, just normal white, shell sand. It is probably very popular in season; glad I’m here off season! Storms still waiting to come ashore!
