Detroit – 25 August 2024

This morning the ship enters the St. Claire River from Lake Huron, heading to Detroit, Michigan. A beautiful start to the day.

Traveling along the St. Claire River once the sun came up.

We reach Detroit around 11:30 AM and dock at Port Detroit next door to the Renaissance Center where General Motors is currently headquartered.

Across the Detroit River is Windsor, Canada. We actually have to board a bus and travel towards Windsor and circle back into the U.S. to present our passports to U.S. Customs and Immigration. Strange but necessary since we have been in Canadian waters for the past four days.

Since we have visited Detroit before, we are just hanging out for the day along the riverfront. I took a nice walk along the river; it is 87 degrees today – HOT! Lots of people are out enjoying their day, walking, biking, scooters, running and just relaxing. Summertime in Detroit.

One of the port staff told me to try the PeopleMover which is a train that goes around the downtown area. I walked into the Renaissance Center to find the station. The Renaissance Center has always been a maze to me. Our daughter worked here back in the early 2000’s and when I was working the company I worked for was located here too. General Motors will be leaving this building and going to a new building being built downtown not too far way. Don’t know what will happen to the RenCenter – it’s an iconic building on the Detroit skyline.

This is the new building under construction that GM is moving to.

Not much more for me to say about Detroit. The excursions today were the Ford Museum, Greenfield Museum, and a Pewabic Pottery place. We’ve done the museums previously. It’s worth exploring if you are ever happen to be here.

One thing we did learn that we did not know. Detroit was the Cast Iron Stove Capitol of the World in the 1900’s. The initial Model T Ford used cast iron for the engine. And, Detroit sits on salt mines, 1200 feet down. Detroit Salt Company mines for this salt and provides much of the USA table salt. How’s that for Trivia!
