Washington DC – Part 2 – 16 July 2023

This morning heading to the airport to return home…..but not until 10 AM. So this is a few more pictures of what I missed seeing yesterday. Yes, I know, more of the WW2 National Memorial?!!? Keep reading!

One of the ‘hidden’ places at the memorial has the famous WW2 military meme. “Kilroy was here.” Check out the history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilroy_was_here

Found both of them! Right near Pennsylvania and Delaware.

After capturing these few pictures, I walk back to the hotel taking a different route. Found the D-Day memorial on its own as a “Prayer for the Nation” area with a engraved plaque with President FDR’s radio address he gave to the nation on the evening of June 6, 1944. It must have been so moving to all Americans listening to him that evening not yet knowing the military planning and events that took place on that day.

Here is a link to this historical prayer. https://www.fdrlibrary.org/d-day

Near this area is the ‘Lockkeeper’s House on the National Mall’ which has been restored and is the oldest building on the National Mall. Beyond the house, the walls where the original lock was built are visible. (This is definitely my last picture of a lockkeeper’s house on this trip!)

Our next trip – Disney World to celebrate Steve’s birthday!
