Viking Homelands – 11 June 2023 – Stockholm

Looks from the date like we skipped a day. We actually spent 10 June 2023 “at sea.” The Baltic Sea was calm and we just relaxed for the day. Enjoyed another meal at The Chef’s Table – delicious.

We sail early morning into the fjord that takes you to Stockholm. The sun rise is 3:30 AM and bright and sunny. It has been a bit more difficult to sleep once that sun is up. So around 5 AM, I’m up and out watching the ship sail in.

The chef’s have prepared an early morning grab and go feast with their talented watermelon carvings.

Our morning is free so we finish packing our suitcases – hard to believe it is the last day of the cruise! We board the first shuttle bus to go to the “Old Town” area and explore. There is a lot to see in this area of the city, plus shops and restaurants. Glad we are here early. Its also a Sunday so a little quieter than usual. Rather than describe every statue and building – just enjoy the pictures. Stockholm is a city since 1252 when the name is first recorded. Many old buildings exist in the city because it was never bombed during either of the World Wars.

One of the churches is ringing its bells to call people to worship. This morning there is a service in German so we did not go into the sanctuary. Just a peek to take some pictures.

In the afternoon we take a tour that also stops in Old Town for a cinnamon bun and coffee in one of the older restaurants basement, at least three levels down stairs; is it really a dungeon!?

We also witness the changing of the guard at The Palace.

On this last bus tour, we take in the other many sights of Stockholm – through the bus window and a stop at City Hall where they hold the banquet for the Noble Peace Prize winners. We do not have the time to visit the museums or shopping district. Another couple of days in Stockholm would have been nice to leisurely explore.

Back on our ship for some dinner, to finish packing, and some sleep with an early call at 5:45 AM. Yes, Aquavit and Swedish Meatballs for dinner – no better way to end our visit to Stockholm!

Our cruise is coming to an end. I am writing this in the airport lounge waiting to board our plane home. My sister and I were able to enjoy the Viking Homelands cruise and for me, I know it is definitely a place to visit AND more than once!

  1. If there are skyscrapers in Scandanavia in general, Stockholm in particular, they seem to be well camouflaged and do not disrupt the views of the older architecture. Based on your blogged images, these northern urban centers have done an excellent job of blending contemporary and long-established styles. ________________________________
